First, I downloaded the app on my phone and logged in using Cl@ve, which is a kind of Spanish digital identity.
At first, I found it a bit bureaucratic, but first of all, I understood that this was necessary to ensure security.
The cool thing is that inside the miDGT I was able to access not only my digital driver's license, but also my driver's license points, car data, and even insurance information.
This way, everything is in the same app, without the need for paperwork. However, when traveling internationally, they recommend carrying the physical version, as not all countries accept digital versions.
So, I use both: on a daily basis the app takes care of everything, but for trips I keep the traditional document in my pocket.
In Argentina, the system surprised everyone with its practicality. The application My Argentina concentrates all digital documents, including the National Driving License.
First, I created my account on the app, then I validated my identity, and then the wallet appeared available on my phone.
First of all, I found it incredibly fast. This makes the experience much simpler than the physical format, which requires lines and waiting.
The detail that caught my attention the most is that the digital version has the same legal value as the physical version within the country.
As with other electronic documents, the police normally accept it. And there's an added benefit: the app alerts you when your license is about to expire.
This way, you don't run the risk of forgetting to renew. I realized that the digital version isn't just a copy, but the main document for driving.
In Mexico, the situation is different because each state has autonomy. Initially, Mexico City, there is the possibility of using the digital wallet within the CDMX App.
First, I downloaded the app, created an account, and then logged in with the CDMX key, which is the city's digital identity.
As in Spain, this process ensures that only the owner of the document has access.
Within the app, the license is located under "Digital Documents." What I found interesting is that the police can scan a QR code for instant validation. This way, there's no risk of fraud.
However, first of all, it is important to know that not all Mexican states offer this functionality.
Therefore, I always confirm before traveling, so as not to depend on a document that may not be accepted in another region.
In Colombia, the digital driver's license is already a reality thanks to Digital Citizen Carpet.
First, I needed to create my account, register my digital identity and only then access my driver's license.
At first, I thought it would be complicated, but the process was actually quite simple, and then I was able to view my license on my cell phone.
The most important detail is that since 2022, it's no longer mandatory to carry the physical version in the country. As in Argentina, the digital version has the same validity.
This way, during an inspection, all you need is internet on your cell phone for agents to confirm the data in the RUNT system.
Still, I prefer to carry a traditional wallet for safety. After all, cell phones can run out of battery and have a connection drop out, and no one wants to be caught in a traffic stop.
In Chile, the government has begun to implement the Digital Driving License progressively.
Initially, some regions received the service as a test, but the trend is that it will soon be available throughout the country.
To activate, I needed to appear at Traffic Directorate from my city, issue the new version and then enable it in the official application using the Single Key.
As in other countries, the digital document is validated by QR Code, providing added security. This allows tax authorities to confirm in real time whether the card is in good standing.
First of all, I found it interesting that they are betting on national technology, tailored to the Chilean reality.
In Ecuador, digital licensing is in the app Gob.ecFirst, I installed the app, then created my account and validated my identity.
Then, the wallet option became available. The curious part is that the document's validity only applies if it's displayed within the app, with a temporary QR Code that changes constantly. Therefore, there's no point in saving a screenshot or an offline copy.
This feature provides increased security against counterfeiting, but requires an internet connection to work. As in Paraguay, real-time verification is mandatory.
Firstly, this can be inconvenient in areas with poor signal strength, but on the other hand, it prevents fraud and gives more confidence to those carrying out inspections.
In Peru, the process is managed by MTC (Ministry of Transport and Communications). First, I needed to pay the fee, create my electronic box and then go to the issuing center to complete.
At first, I thought the digital version would be sent directly to the app, but first, the system sends the electronic version of the wallet to the registered email address.
This way, the electronic document has the same value as the physical version and can be used throughout the country.
Still, for international travel, they recommend carrying the traditional version. As in other countries, technology helps, but tradition ensures extra security.
In Uruguay, the experience was very good because the country centralized several documents in the application gub.uy.
First, I created my User gub.uy, then I activated the digital identity called TuID and then I loaded my wallet into the app.
Just like in Argentina, the digital driver's license is valid nationwide. Furthermore, the app even sends notifications reminding you of the expiration date.
This way, you can't forget to renew. First of all, I found it practical, modern, and efficient, which fits in well with Uruguay's approach to digital services.
In Paraguay, digital qualification is available at Paraguay PortalFirst, I needed to create my electronic identity, then I entered the app and selected the wallet option.
The system then generated a QR Code valid for a limited time.
As in Ecuador, verification relies on the internet. This allows police officers to confirm the document is genuine in seconds.
First, it makes the process safe, but it requires us to always be connected. So, when I travel to more remote regions, I still prefer to carry the physical version with me.
In Bolivia, the SEGIP launched the application My Identity, which centralizes digital documents, including qualifications.
First, I downloaded the app, then created my account, and then added my driver's license. Interestingly, the system is still relatively new, so not everyone has adopted it.
As in other countries, digital makes things easier, but it is recommended to carry the physical version with you.
This way, in areas where inspections aren't fully adapted, you avoid embarrassment. First of all, I appreciated the initiative, but I still see room for improvement.
After exploring each country, I can say that the application to get a driver's license online It's already a reality in much of Latin America, including Spain. First, all governments have created official platforms, which fosters trust. As with other digital services, the key is to use the correct app and follow the validation process.
